Furthermore, each Temple Guard only showed himself once per run, leaving the second player with a clear route to where the first player was eliminated. When a player encountered a Temple Guard, the player was forced to give up his/her pendant in order to go on however, if the first contestant was caught without a pendant, he/she was taken out of the temple and it would be the second player's turn to enter, with all opened doors remaining as such. One room in the temple contained the themed artifact three specific rooms other than the artifact room held Temple Guards (actors in lavish Mayan sentinel costumes). The unlocked doors could be opened either by completing a specific task or puzzle within each room, or by simply pressing a button or actuator. Often, doors were locked to require teams to make a more indirect and longer path in order to get to the room with the artifact. The temple consisted of several rooms, each connected to adjacent rooms by doorways, arbitrarily locked or unlocked in varied patterns. Each player would receive each pendant, and then decided who would go first and/or second. In the final round, often known as the Temple Run, the winning team took the two Pendants of Life they earned into the temple, and attempted to retrieve the ancient artifact of the day, and bring it back to the temple gate successfully. The team that wins the tiebreaker won the last pendant and goes to Olmec's Temple. The team has three seconds to answer, and their first response had to be accepted as their answer. The first team to hit the button on top of their gong earns the chance to answer the question. Olmec asks a tiebreaker question to determine the winner, and if a team is incorrect, the other team is given a chance to answer. In the event that the two teams each won one game/pendant, the teams play a tiebreaker to determine which team would advance to the Temple. The first team to win both games, goes on to Olmec's Temple. After each challenge, the team who won it earns a pendant of life. Temple Game challenges were either race-to-the-finish-types or "fastest time wins"-types. Legends employed a number of diverse Temple Games. Here, "the glory to the fastest and the strongest" as the two remaining teams competed for two pendants of life in two physical challenges. The Temple Games round was introduced as a turning point in the episode away from the unpredictable Moat and mind games of the Steps of Knowledge.

The first two teams to step down to the bottom level by answering a total of three questions correctly moves on to the next round. A question is thrown out when two of its three choices were eliminated by incorrect answers.

If a team answers incorrectly or takes too long to answer (three seconds after being called upon), the other teams have a chance to answer. If a team answers correctly, they move down to the next level.

If Olmec is still in the middle of asking the question, he would stop talking immediately.

A team who knows the answer buzzes in by stomping down on an "ancient marking" on their step, causing the front of their step to illuminate. Each multiple-choice question has three possible answers.

After finishing, he asks the teams a series of questions to test their memories. Olmec begins the Steps of Knowledge by telling the three remaining teams the episode's legend. The first four teams to cross the moat and hit their gongs advanced to the second round. Typically, if a team member falls in the water, that partner (or occasionally both teammates) has to go back and try again until successful. All four teams attempt to get both members across according to the rules and hit their gongs. The first round of the show involves a stunt where the four teams try to get across the "moat". Each team was designated a color and an animal, indicated on their uniform shirts: In each episode, four teams of two players each competed in three rounds to get to the temple and win up to $25,000 in cash, offered by Chime.
